There has been great interest in the Virgin Media fibre-optic broadband service which claims that speeds of up to 50Mbps are available in more and more areas of the UK. Virgin fibre-optic broadband is a direct response to the ongoing fibre-optic network being created by British Telecom at a cost of billions of pounds. While British Telecom expects to have the vast majority of the UK covered by 2012 the Virgin fibre-optic broadband network is already available.
There are a variety of Virgin Media broadband packages available with speeds starting at up to 10Mbps with the Virgin size L broadband package moving to 20Mbps with the Virgin size XL broadband package and finally up to 50Mbps with the Virgin XXL broadband package. At this moment in time it is safe to say that Virgin broadband offers some of the latest broadband technology available on the market and is ahead of many competitors in the UK.
It will be interesting to see how the likes of BT broadband, Sky broadband and the various mobile broadband companies respond to this as Virgin Media also has various telephone and cable TV packages which have been bundled together, with the broadband packages, to offer great value for money.
