Statistics released from comScore show that the UK online viewing audience has grown by 10% as the effects of increased broadband speeds and increased availability start to have a significant impact upon Internet TV audiences. The top 10 online video websites visited by UK broadband users include (figures are viewers for January 2009): -

1. YouTube 23.5 million unique visitors

2. BBC iPlayer 6.7 million unique visitors

3. Microsoft MSN 4.3 million unique visitors

4. Facebook 3.5 million unique visitors

5. Yahoo! 3 million unique visitors

6. Amazon 2.9 million unique visitors

7. Fox Interactive Media 2.5 million unique visitors

8. AOL 2.2 million unique visitors

9. Mega 2.1 million unique visitors

10. Metcafe 1.9 million unique visitors

It has also been revealed that a total of 4 billion videos were viewed online during January 2009 with the vast majority originating from BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky. It seems as though online viewing patterns in UK have significantly changed over the last 12 months with more and more people happy to view videos, programs and news reports online 24 hours a day seven days a week.

There is no doubt that the increase in broadband speeds across the UK has been highly influential in the increase in viewing figures for online material. While IPTV and HDTV online have yet to really kick in there are hopes we will see further progress in these fields over the next 12 to 24 months.
